How to Stitch a Button on Clothes

Things you’ll need:

  • Needle

  • Thread (matching the fabric color)

  • Scissors

  • The button

Steps:

  1. Thread the needle

    • Cut about 40–50 cm of thread.

    • Pass it through the needle and tie a knot at the end.

  2. Position the button

    • Place the button exactly where it should be.

    • If there are other buttons, use them as a guide to keep it in line.

  3. Start from the back

    • Insert the needle from the inside of the cloth so the knot stays hidden.

    • Pull it through one of the buttonholes.

  4. Sew through the holes

    • If it’s a four-hole button: stitch diagonally (X shape) or in parallel (II shape).

    • If it’s a two-hole button: stitch back and forth several times.

  5. Make a shank (for thick cloth)

    • After stitching, pass the needle between the button and the cloth.

    • Wrap the thread around the stitches 3–4 times to make a small “stem” (this gives space for the button to sit flat when fastened).

  6. Secure the thread

    • Push the needle to the inside of the fabric.

    • Make a few small stitches on the inside to lock it.

    • Cut off extra thread.

How to Stitch Torn Clothes

Things you’ll need:

  • Needle

  • Thread (matching the cloth color)

  • Scissors

  • Safety pin (optional to hold fabric in place)

Steps:

  1. Clean the edges

    • Trim any loose threads around the tear with scissors.

  2. Thread the needle

    • Cut a piece of thread about 40–50 cm long.

    • Pass it through the needle’s eye and tie a small knot at the end.

  3. Align the torn fabric

    • Place the two torn edges together neatly.

    • You can pin them with a safety pin to hold in place.

  4. Start stitching

    • Insert the needle from the inside of the cloth so the knot stays hidden.

    • Use a running stitch (simple in-and-out) or a backstitch (stronger, overlapping) along the tear.

  5. Secure the stitch

    • When you reach the end, make a few small stitches in place to secure the thread.

    • Tie a small knot and cut off the extra thread.

  6. Check and iron

    • Check that the stitch is firm.

    • Lightly iron the area so the fabric sits flat.
