🇮🇳 India Today

  • The name ‘Bharata’ is still used:

    • In North India: Bharat

    • In South India: Bharatam

  • A 2,000-year-old Tamil poem describes India from:

    • Cape Kumari (South)

    • To the Himalayas (North)

    • Between the Eastern and Western oceans

The word India comes from the Indus, called Sindhu in Sanskrit. The Iranians and the Greeks who came through the northwest about 2500 years ago called it the Hindos or the Indos, and the land to the east of the river was called India.

Ancient Indians and the Idea of India

Long ago, people in different parts of India had a similar idea of their country. For example, a 2,000-year-old Tamil poem talks about a great king. This king was known from Cape Kumari in the South, to the Himalayas in the North, and from the Eastern Ocean to the Western Ocean.

This shows that even in ancient times, Indians knew the full shape and size of their land. They saw it as one big country with natural borders like mountains and oceans.

How Foreigners Named India

🔹 Persians (6th century BCE)

  • First foreigners to mention India.

  • Called the Sindhu river ‘Hind’, ‘Hidu’, or ‘Hindu’.

  • ‘Hindu’ was a geographical term, not religious.

  • Later used the word Hindustan for the Indian subcontinent.

🔹 Greeks

  • Took the name from Persians.

  • Called India ‘Indoi’ or ‘Indike’.

  • Changed ‘Hindu’ to ‘Indoi’ (no ‘H’ sound in Greek).

  • Sindhu → Hindu → Indoi

🔹 Chinese

  • Called India Yindu, Yintu, or Tianzhu.

  • Also from the word Sindhu.

  • Tianzhu means “heavenly master”, showing respect for India as the land of Buddha.
