Exam Character Sketch of Tom Sawyer Tom Sawyer is the main character in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer . At the beginning of the story, he is a playful and mischievous boy who loves adventure. He admires his friend Huck Finn, who has no rules to follow. Tom often tries to escape from school and chores to have fun. As the story continues, Tom begins to show bravery and kindness. He tells the truth at Muff Potter’s trial, even though he is scared. He also helps Becky when she is in trouble at school and later finds a way out of a dangerous cave, saving himself and his friends. Even though Tom starts to take more responsibility, he still enjoys fun and adventure. He likes Becky and wants her attention, and he sometimes wishes he could live freely like Huck. Later, it was appeared in Hughes' first poetic collection  The Weary Blues  (1926). Langston Hughes (1901–1967)  Langston Hughes was a famous American poet, writer, and playwright.
