SIMPLE, COMPOUND AND COMPLEX SENTENCES
What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that gives a complete meaning.
It always has:
-
a subject (who/what the sentence is about)
-
a predicate (what is said about the subject)
Example:
Riya plays football.
– Subject: Riya
– Predicate: plays football
1. The children played in the park.
2. I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining.
3. When the bell rang, the students lined up quickly.
4. Neha and Ritu baked a cake together.
5. He studied very hard, so he passed the exam.
6. Although he was tired, he finished his homework.
7. The birds were singing.
8. We can go to the zoo, or we can stay at home.
9. If you practice daily, you will become a better dancer.
10. The cat slept on the warm mat.
11. She tried calling him several times, but he didn’t answer.
12. Because it was a holiday, the streets were empty.
Types of Sentences and Examples
1. Simple Sentence
- A simple sentence has one independent clause with one (or more) subject and one verb, expressing a complete thought.
Examples:
- The sun rises in the east.
- She loves to read books.
- He plays football every evening.
- Birds fly in the sky.
- The baby is sleeping.
- I enjoy painting.
- I enjoy dancing and acting.
2. Compound Sentence
- A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (e.g., and, but, or, so).
Examples:
- I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining.
- She studied hard, and she passed the exam.
- The dog barked loudly, so the neighbors complained.
- He cooked dinner, and his sister cleaned the dishes.
- They can watch a movie, or they can play a game.
- We missed the bus, but we took a taxi.
- Sudha went home and took rest. (The second subject 'she' is omitted here.)
3. Complex Sentence
- A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses joined by a subordinating conjunction (e.g., because, although, when, if, since).
Examples:
- She stayed home because she was feeling unwell.
- Although it was raining, they continued the match.
- When the teacher arrived, the students became quiet.
- If you work hard, you will succeed.
- He bought the book that his friend recommended.
- Since the roads were blocked, they took a different route.
- A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Examples:
- Although it was raining, we went for a walk, and we enjoyed it.
- She missed the bus because she woke up late, but she still reached school on time.
- If you study hard, you will pass the test, and your parents will be proud.
- Although he was tired, he finished his work, and he submitted it on time.
- When the bell rang, the students left the classroom, and the teacher packed her things.
Relative pronouns: who, whoever, whom, whomever, that, which, when, where, and whose.
