C-S Sentences
A compound sentence can be converted into a simple sentence by combining two independent clauses of the compound sentence into a single clause.
Method 1: By using a Participle (verb+ing)
C- The dog barked loudly and scared the mailman away.
S -Barking loudly, the dog scared the mailman away.
Compound: Sarah laughed heartily and hugged her friend tightly.
Simple: Laughing heartily, Sarah hugged her friend tightly.
Compound: The children played joyfully and sang songs loudly.
Simple: Playing joyfully, the children sang songs loudly.
Compound: The birds chirped cheerfully and danced in the sunlight.
Simple: Chirping cheerfully, the birds danced in the sunlight.
Compound: Sarah finished her homework and went to bed.
Simple: Finishing her homework, Sarah went to bed.
Compound: The train arrived late and caused a lot of inconveniences.
Simple: Arriving late, the train caused a lot of inconveniences.
Method 2: By using a Prepositional Phrase
Compound: They were lost, so they asked for directions.
Simple: Upon being lost, they asked for directions.
Compound: He is wealthy, but he doesn’t like to flaunt his money.
Simple: Despite his wealth, he doesn’t like to flaunt his money.
Compound: She was running late, but she still made it to the meeting on time.
Simple: Despite running late, she made it to the meeting on time.
Compound: He was sick, but he still managed to go to work.
Simple: Despite being sick, he went to work.
Compound: They were scared, so they stayed together.
Simple: Due to their fear, they stayed together.
Compound: She was hungry, but she didn’t have anything to eat.
Simple: Despite her hunger, she had nothing to eat.
Method 3: By using an Infinitive
Compound: She needs to study hard, or she won’t pass the exam.
Simple: She needs to study hard to pass the exam.
Compound: He has to eat healthier, or he will get sick.
Simple: He has to eat healthier to avoid getting sick.
Compound: They have to save money, or they won’t be able to buy a house.
Simple: They have to save money to buy a house.
Compound: She should exercise regularly, or she will gain weight.
Simple: She should exercise regularly to avoid gaining weight.
Compound: He must finish his homework, or he won’t be able to go out with his friends.
Simple: He must finish his homework to go out with his friends.
Compound: They have to finish the project tonight, or they will miss the deadline.
Simple: They have to finish the project tonight to meet the deadline.
